Jane Abzug is an associate in Best Best & Krieger LLP’s Municipal Law practice group. She previously practiced at Jenkins & Hogin LLP. Jane handles a variety of transactional and litigation matters relating to municipal law. She is the assistant city attorney for the City of Rolling Hills Planning Commission and helps municipalities navigate through a variety of legal issues that arise from compliance with the Brown Act and the Public Records Act. Jane has drafted ordinances prohibiting plastic straws and cutlery within the City of Malibu and regulating solicitation within other municipalities. She oversaw an investigation that involved interpretation of a city’s charter in the context of the city manager-council form of government.
 
With laws constantly changing due to advancements in technology and efforts to correct the housing shortage in California, Jane remains up-to-date on the latest local and state requirements to ensure clients are in compliance with the best practices for sharing and storing electronic data and the development standards for accessory dwelling units. Jane handles a variety of litigation matters for municipalities in the trial and appellate courts, including issues related to public works projects, land use and rent control disputes.
 
Previously, Jane was an attorney at Shernoff Bidart Echeverria LLP, where she handled health, disability, life and property insurance cases, as well as various product and premise liability cases. While attending Loyola Law School, Jane was a member of the Hobbs District Attorney Clinic. She also held externships with a federal magistrate judge, the United States Attorney's Office in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office and Bet Tzedek Legal Services.
 
Jane is admitted to practice in the Central District of California and is licensed to practice law in the State of California.
