The Cost of Doing Business: Best Practices for Public Works Projects

BB&K Free Two-Part Webinar

A major construction or public works project can be one of the most exciting — and stressful — ventures a city or special district may embark on. This webinar series discusses key legal issues and risks to consider when your agency decides to build something new. We will provide tips to take charge of your project and mitigate against unforeseen litigation and other pitfalls.

Part One: Laying the Groundwork

Are you ready to break dirt and begin construction? The first presentation in this series discusses project preparations. We analyze the potential risks that can arise on a large project, and how you can control those risks through proper planning. We identify potential circumstances that could give rise to liability or cost overruns, and how to use your bid and contract documents to control the risks. The presentation also discusses unique issues that arise with grant-funded projects and how to ensure that your ability to recover grant funds is protected.

Part Two: Don't Hit the Roof

Even the best laid plans can go awry. Part II focuses on remaining calm under pressure when a project does not go as planned. During this presentation, we discuss how to administer problem projects in a manner that attempts to avoid litigation —, while preserving your potential defenses and settlement position. It covers challenges in the bid or proposal process, and the resolution of claims and change orders when the project begins.  It also addresses specific considerations for change orders on federally funded projects.
