Rio Plaza Elementary Students Received Donated Backpacks Filled with Supplies

BB&K’s Annual Operation Backpack Help Students Learn at Home

OXNARD, Calif. —  The start of the school year usually fills young students with excitement, and even some nervousness. But the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year is unlike any students have ever experienced before. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the students at Rio Plaza Elementary School in Oxnard, like so many around California and the nation, began their school year online — but with the hope that they return to campus sometime soon.

For its 11th Annual Operation Backpack giveaway, Best Best & Krieger LLP selected Rio Plaza students to receive backpacks filled with school supplies. Each of the nearly 600 students from transitional kindergarten through 5th grade received their backpacks and supplies before school started on Aug. 31.With Rio Plaza serving mostly students from low socio-economic families, there is an added stress of starting the school year without the supplies they need to learn — especially with learning happening at home.

“With so much uncertainty right now, I’m glad BB&K is able to provide support to these students to help them succeed in school,” said Partner and Municipal Law Practice Group Leader Scott Campbell, who serves as general counsel for the Gold Coast Health Plan, which provides medical services to about 200,000 Ventura County residents. “BB&K’s work in Ventura County has increased in recent years, and many of us feel a personal connection to the people who live, work and study here. Helping the County’s youngest residents is a privilege.”

“This is super exciting for our students,” added Principal Brenda Morales Bravo. “Every year, we see families who are barely making ends meet try to get their children the supplies they need. There are some kids who have had to go without a backpack. Our families kept asking if the giveaway was true!”

This is already a big year for Rio Plaza as it is transitioned to a full Spanish-English dual-immersion campus with this year’s incoming kindergarten class. The curriculum not only supports bilingual education, but also multi-culturalism. Many of the students’ parents are Spanish-speaking farm workers from Mexico and Central America, so this is a way to keep communication open with their parents and a connection to their heritages, Morales Bravo added.

BB&K is excited to support to the students with backpacks and supplies, all donated by BB&K employees and sponsors, including hundreds of pens, highlighters and notebooks from Staples and their vendors Highlands, B3W and Tops Products. BB&K has helped more than 6,000 students over the last 10 years be prepared for school with new backpacks and supplies.
