LOS ANGELES — Best Best & Krieger LLP Partner Ruben Duran is serving an appointment to the State Bar of California Board of Trustees. Sworn-in Thursday by California Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, Duran was appointed by Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon.
“The appointment is a true honor, and comes with a tremendous responsibility and opportunity to help bring change and oversight to the California legal profession and the people we serve,” Duran says.
The State Bar of California oversees the licensing, regulation and discipline of attorneys in the State. It is also charged with advancing the ethical and competent practice of law and supporting access and inclusion within California’s legal system. The Board of Trustees is the Bar’s governing body, which develops guiding policies and principles. Attorneys on the 13-member Board are appointed by either the Supreme Court or the Legislature, while six non-attorneys are appointed by the Governor and the Legislature.
Duran has worked with and for public agencies for the entirety of his 20-year career. He serves as general counsel for the Oxnard Harbor District and the Hub Cities Consortium, a joint powers agency that provides workforce development services to the cities of Bell Gardens, Cudahy, Huntington Park, Lynwood, Maywood and South Gate. He is also general counsel to the Fenner Valley Water Authority, the Stallion Springs Community Services District and the Altadena Library District.
“My public law background provides a strong foundation in the essential areas of open government and transparency, as well as ethics and conflicts of interest,” he says. “I’m grateful to Speaker Rendon for this opportunity to serve the public and the attorney licensees in the State, and to play a role in ensuring that access to justice and public protection remain at the top of the Bar’s priorities, as so eloquently put by the Chief Justice at the swearing-in ceremony.”
