Policy Brief: Automated Vehicles Governance

By Gregory Rodriguez

Through Best Best & Krieger LLP’s Washington, D.C. office, we provide legal, policy and regulatory guidance around automated vehicle deployment. BB&K focuses on balancing innovation promotion in consideration of states and local governments’ critical roles in the safe and effective deployment of automated vehicles. With this focus in mind, Greg Rodriguez was pleased to collaborate with the 3 Revolutions policy team at the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies & Policy Institute for Energy, Environment, and the Economy on its latest Policy Brief focused on developing a governance structure that maximizes the benefits of automated vehicles in our communities.

The Brief discusses regional and local governments’ important role in planning transportation systems; cautions against the use of broad preemption language at this early stage of development; highlights the significant opportunity that pilot projects bring for development of data driven regulations and emphasizes the need for the federal government to prioritize continuous improvement in automated vehicle safety.
