Industry’s Recent Assault of Cable Franchises and Next Steps for Locals

National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors

Best Best & Krieger LLP Partner Gerard Lederer will be a presenter for the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors webinar, "Industry’s Recent Assault of Cable Franchises and Next Steps for Locals." In mid-June, the Internet & Television Association, with Comcast, Charter and Cox, visited the FCC and urged the Commission to take action on two proceedings that would, "prevent state and local governments from imposing duplicative regulations and fees and other regulatory obstacles that have the effect of hindering the deployment of new facilities and services by cable operators."

Translation: They want the FCC to preempt municipal authority over non-cable services, effectively rewriting cable franchise agreements to authorize use of cable systems for any services a cable operator wants to provide while retaining a franchise fee based solely on revenue from cable services. This webinar will take a deep dive into the past, present and future of franchise fees and 47 U.S. Code 542 in light of NCTA's recent filing.
