Comprehensive Code Enforcement

Enforcing municipal codes and ordinances isn’t about generating fines or jail time — it’s about improving the quality of life for citizens in the community. Best Best & Krieger LLP’s Comprehensive Code Enforcement team consists of seasoned prosecutors who know how to efficiently handle complex and politically sensitive issues cities face as they address the nuisances that impact public health and safety. We work closely with city enforcement teams to provide clients with effective yet cost-efficient options to achieve compliance with local rules around everything from dangerous and dilapidated property to massage parlors and marijuana dispensaries.

BB&K’s Code Enforcement team includes attorneys who have worked on both sides of the process: prosecuting offenders while working in-house in local prosecution offices and representing the accused. With backgrounds in public policy, public affairs and even the private sector, the team brings a diverse perspective and creative solutions to code enforcement challenges.

Comprehensive Service
BB&K’s Code Enforcement team assists cities and public agencies with all aspects of code compliance and enforcement prosecution, including:

  • Abatement and inspection warrants, including demolition of buildings
  • Administrative citations, fines and appeal proceedings
  • Cannabis-related issues
  • Civil litigation, writ proceedings and appeals
  • Criminal prosecutions
  • Drafting, interpretation and enforcement of ordinances, policies and regulations
  • Graffiti abatement
  • Massage parlor abatements
  • Nuisance abatement actions and pursuit of liens and assessments
  • Permitting and license revocations
  • Receiverships
  • Staff training

Unrivaled Experience
As a full-service law firm with a focus on the representation of public entities, we offer unrivaled experience in addressing all of our clients’ needs. Our team provides pre-litigation general counsel advice, serves as city prosecutor in misdemeanor prosecutions, obtains civil remedies, such as injunctions and receiver appointments, and represents clients in administrative hearings and in courts at all levels. The Code Enforcement team collaborates closely with BB&K attorneys in other practice areas, such as its Police & Public Safety, Environmental Law & Natural Resources and ARC: Advanced Records Center to address related issues that may arise.
