BB&K Receives High Ranks for Law Firm Diversity

Firm Leadership Renews Commitment to Supporting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

In a year when national attention has focused like never before on issues of equality, race and inclusion, Best Best & Krieger LLP is proud to receive continued high marks for diversity from national legal publications.
However, there is more that we, and everyone in the legal community, can and must do to support people of color, women and those in the LGBTQ community. The bedrock principle of our legal system is that everyone must be treated equally under the law, and the events of 2020 show that much must still be done to make this a reality. While we celebrate our leadership in diversity in the legal industry, we remain hard at work to ensure that our firm culture and our recruiting, hiring and promoting practices include a broad range of backgrounds, experiences and demographics.
This year, BB&K received diversity rankings as follows:

  • Among mid-size firms in the U.S., those with 101-250 attorneys, BB&K was ranked No. 5 for Diversity and No. 4 for Minority Equity Partners by Law360, which also ranked BB&K No. 7 on its Glass Ceiling Report for Female Attorneys and Equity Partners.
  • American Lawyer Media ranked BB&K No. 9 for Firms with the Highest Percentage of Minority Attorneys on its Diversity Scorecard.
  • The National Law Journal put BB&K in its No. 14 slot for the annual Women in Law Scorecard.

“The events of this year make it clear that much work remains to be done to ensure that everyone is treated fairly under our legal system,” Managing Partner Eric Garner said. “The fact that slavery continued for years after the Emancipation Proclamation reminds those of us who work in law that laws can only take a society so far. Ultimately real and permanent change only occurs with right action by the individuals in a society.”

Garner and the BB&K leadership team, working closely with Chief Talent Officer Danielle Sakai, encouraged all attorneys and employees this year to pause and reflect on how each person can listen, learn and change for the better and take actions toward eliminating racism and bias not only in the workplace, but in the community.

In the last few months, all BB&K attorneys and employees participated in a mandatory webinar to address implicit bias. The webinar, “Where We Stand and Taking It Forward Together: How We Can Move Forward and Increase Allyship and Inclusion in the Legal Profession” was presented by Dr. Arin Reeves, a researcher, author and consultant on leadership and inclusion. BB&K will be working with Dr. Reeves on an ongoing basis.

In addition, BB&K set up a Diversity Committee to facilitate addressing issues of equality both within and outside the firm. The Diversity Committee’s work will be done in conjunction with the firm’s existing Recruiting Committee and professional development and mentoring programs.

“While BB&K has always performed well in legal industry diversity rankings, we know diversity, equity and inclusion is not just about the numbers — it’s an ongoing conversation and focus on putting systems in place to ensure we are respecting differences and recognizing unique perspectives,” Sakai said. “The Diversity Committee and firm-mandated activities will ensure we continue to take meaningful action.”

Law360 considered the percentage of attorneys of color at the firm and the percentage of partners of color to create scores for its rankings. BB&K is proud to be among the top law firms that the publication says “are showing that law firms can create opportunities, and work to build a partnership with more diverse talent and diverse perspectives.”
BB&K’s long-standing commitment to diversity is reflected through being consistently ranked as a top law firm by these publications over recent years.
