Cities and other public utilities have increasing interest in incorporating “green” policies into their procurement of services and commodities. Electric utilities face a State mandate under Senate Bill 1, the California Solar Initiative and related regulations to increase the share of energy they acquire from renewable sources. In addition to contracts for increased solid waste diversion under AB 939, agencies can bargain for a broader array of sustainable practices in solid waste franchises

In a 9th Circuit decision that could set a precedent for local governments across the United States, trash haulers, school and city bus lines and other publicaly funded vehicle fleets operating within the Southcoast Air Quality Management District in Southern California can be required to buy low-polluting vehicles fueled by alternative fuels.
