Marco A. Martinez is a Partner in the Public Law Department of the Irvine office of Best Best & Krieger LLP.  Mr. Martinez has over 6 years of Municipal Law experience and over 15 years of land use/zoning experience which he uses to assist and advise municipal clients.  His practice areas include general municipal law, First Amendment law, public contracts, land use and zoning, subdivisions, housing, and CEQA issues.  Mr. Martinez currently serves as City Attorney for the City of Montebello and Assistant City Attorney for the Cities of Colton, Azusa and Big Bear Lake.  He previously served as Planning Commission Attorney and Assistant City Attorney for the Cites of Ontario, Lafayette and San Jacinto.  In his role as assistant city attorney for several cities, he regularly attends both city council and planning commission meetings.  He regularly reviews and drafts agenda reports, ordinances, resolutions, and contracts.  Mr. Martinez was recently appointed the General Counsel to the California Chapter of the American Planning Association.

Mr. Martinez attended California State Polytechnic University Pomona and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning in 1987.  He later received his J.D. from Loyola Law School.  Prior to joining Best Best & Krieger, Mr. Martinez was a planner with the City of Downey and a subdivision planner with the County of Los Angeles, Department of Regional Planning.  He was also selected to serve as a California Executive Fellow in 1987-1988 with the California Department of Housing and Community Development where his primary duties consisted of researching and writing housing issue papers, as well as reviewing housing elements.  While in law school, Mr. Martinez also served as an intern/adviser on local government issues to the 58th Assembly District and Assemblywoman (now Congresswoman) Grace Napolitano. 

Mr. Martinez is a member of the American Planning Association, the Riverside County Bar Association and the League of California Cities Adult Business Committee.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).  He is a frequent presenter at the California Chapter of the American Planning Association’s Annual Conference.  In the spring, he also teaches a zoning and subdivision course at the University of California Riverside.
